We are excited to announce that we will be holding a Volunteer Orientation Refresher and kicking off of a brand new volunteer program on Wednesday, November 8, 3:00pm to 5:00pm. The refresher is required for all volunteers who attended orientation prior to February 2023. All volunteers are welcome and encouraged to attend.
Over half of you attended orientation four or more years ago, or attended right before we migrated to the new volunteer portal at the beginning of this year. We are all overdue for a refresher! We will cover the basics of volunteering at NEST and how to use the new volunteer portal. BUT THAT’S NOT ALL!
We are thrilled to be able to offer a monthly discussion group for volunteers. Read on to learn more.
Why –
- To meet other volunteers and share your experiences
- To discuss what works, what doesn’t, what is troubling, what is rewarding
- To support volunteers in the good work you do
- And so much more!
Choosing to volunteer is an act of kindness and to volunteer at NEST is special indeed. Any volunteer opportunity will have its challenges, some more so than others. At NEST we recognize that despite our mission to support people to live independently and safely at home, as aging changes occur, the needs of an older adult may require greater supports.
In an effort to support you in the important part that you play at NEST, we are initiating a monthly discussion group. This will be a time to talk with other volunteers about their experiences, both positive and challenging, and how to address some of the difficult issues you may encounter while volunteering.
Barbara Green, a social worker skilled in working with an older adult population will facilitate this discussion group. Whether figuring out ways to communicate with someone with dementia, or the joys or limitations of your relationship with your member, or your responsibilities as you meet the mobility challenges of an older adult, this gathering will be a time to address your concerns and joyful experiences.
