Maintaining our balance is an important way to prevent falls. This involves our ability to move, stay upright on uneven ground, and recover from limited tipping over. We need to use and even challenge our balance to maintain it. In this talk, we’ll quickly review the whole-body aspects of balance such as the use of our feet, legs, torso, and head and eyes. We’ll demonstrate and practice together the use of counterbalance to recover from a body tip. As much as we work to avoid falls, some are inevitable, so we’ll end by talking about how to practice falling better.
Dr. Gail Thompson is a retired anthropologist. She has followed and trained in the Feldenkrais Method® of movement education for more than 20 years and teaches weekly classes at NEST and the Lifetime Learning Center
